The S&P 500 closed essentially flat at 7,704.13 (-0.02%), a headline number that hid real damage underneath: 170 stocks rose against 328 decliners (average return -0.59%), new lows (44) ran more than triple new highs (13), and only 26.5% of the index sits above its 50-day average. The driver is the bond market — the 10-year held at 5.11% and the 30-year at 5.40%, both multi-decade highs, even as the Fed’s own priced path (3.75% this month, rising only to 4.39% by next February) barely moved, marking this a term-premium story more than a fresh hike-odds one. Communication Services (+1.87%) carried the tape alone, on Meta (+4.50%) and Alphabet (+1.34%), while idiosyncratic wreckage hit elsewhere: Gen Digital cratered 12.05% and GoDaddy jumped 4.60% on Gen Digital’s reported takeover approach, and MGM Resorts fell 10.99% after Barry Diller walked away from a takeover bid.

Oil ran the same pattern: Brent spiked as much as 5% intraday after Houthi missiles targeting Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea oil hub were intercepted, then settled up 2.54% as U.S. and Iranian negotiators reportedly discussed a phased Hormuz reopening, per CNBC; Brent’s front-month curve stayed far more backwardated (+6.75% roll) than WTI’s (+1.39%), pricing the risk as regional, not a broad shock. Ed Yardeni, who coined the term, wrote that the “Bond Vigilantes are daring Bessent to use the bazooka in his toolkit”, framing the yield surge as fiscal, not monetary. The Trump-Xi summit added little: the two sides extended their trade truce two months but reached no breakthrough on tariffs, rare earths or Taiwan, per Foreign Policy.

Our take: The real signal isn’t the flat index, it’s the gap between assets: yields at 2007-era highs while the priced Fed path barely moved and VIX sat at just 15.67. That prices today’s stress into duration and credit — HY OAS ticked wider to 2.73% — not equities. If the vigilantes are right about fiscal risk, stocks are the one asset class that hasn’t repriced yet.

The 10-year breakeven actually ticked down to 2.33% even as nominal yields spiked — a sign real yields, not inflation expectations, are doing the driving. The 2s10s spread widened 5bp to 0.31, a curve move more consistent with a fiscal-premium repricing than fresh growth or inflation fears.

Moderna’s 6.98% gain led all S&P movers, and it wasn’t alone: Charles River Laboratories (+6.17%) and Revvity (+6.03%) also jumped, a cluster of life-sciences-tools names moving together that the macro story doesn’t explain.
