Thursday flipped the week's script. After three sessions of hawkish Fed rhetoric grinding through a narrow, breadth-negative tape, the S&P 500 jumped 1.06% to a fresh high of 7,747.71 (+12.97% ytd), the Nasdaq 100 — the Wrap's tech benchmark, not the more widely quoted Composite — rose 1.16% to 29,482.32 (+16.96% ytd), and the Russell 2000 added 0.51% to 2,968.27 (+18.34% ytd). The VIX fell 5.79% to 14.32, and breadth finally turned: 303 stocks advanced against 199 decliners (average return +0.47%), new highs (18) outpaced new lows (9) for the first time in days, and the share of the index above its 50-day average jumped to 48.3% from Wednesday's 46.1%.

The trigger was a single Fed official reversing the week's hawkish drift. Governor Christopher Waller, speaking at the Reuters NEXT Newsmaker Interview, argued for holding rates steady at the September 15–16 FOMC: “Give disinflation a chance. We can wait one meeting,” he said, adding that “hiking 25 basis points, one meeting right now, is not going to bring the CPI down to 2%.” That directly countered the hawkish signaling from Governor Michael Barr and Chair Kevin Warsh that had pushed CME-tracked September hike odds toward two-thirds this week. The Wrap's own fed-funds pack, which never priced that hawkish a path, drifted further dovish still: September's implied rate eased to 3.69% (was 3.70% Wednesday) and the curve now bottoms at 4.01% by February 2027 (was 4.07%).

None of this reflected any Iran de-escalation. Vice President JD Vance said Thursday that Washington “will only return to negotiations with Iran if Tehran stops targeting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz,” while Prime Minister Netanyahu called toppling the Iranian regime “within reach,” per the Times of Israel's live coverage. Yet gold rallied 3.71% to $4,528.10 and Bitcoin jumped 4.78% to $80,997.03 in lockstep with equities rather than as a flight from them — both moves reading as a dollar-and-duration story off the Waller pivot rather than fresh safe-haven demand.

Underneath, the rally had real breadth but a rate-relief logic that didn't fully hold together: Materials led sectors (+1.54%, Nucor +4.78%, Newmont +2.06%) and Communication Services followed (+0.99%, Meta +2.47%), but Real Estate was the lone sector in the red (-0.75%: Prologis -2.21%, American Tower -1.76%) — an odd laggard on a session ostensibly about lower rates ahead.

Our take: Thursday's move was real — the breadth reversal argues this wasn't just short-covering — but it rested on one governor's comments against a Fed that has otherwise sounded hawkish for weeks, and against a geopolitical backdrop that, per Vance's own framing Thursday, is nowhere near resolution. Friday's jobs report is now the tiebreaker: a firm print keeps Barr's and Warsh's case alive and could snap this bounce right back; a soft one hands the committee Waller's argument for a pause.
