Monday split the tape along a fault line that ran straight through Big Tech: a geopolitics-driven risk-off in the index averages collided with an AI-hardware supply story running the opposite way. The S&P 500 fell 0.52% to 7,745.06 (+12.93% ytd), the Nasdaq 100 eased 0.17% to 29,995.38 (+19.00% ytd) and the Russell 2000 slipped 0.35% to 3,057.54 (+21.90% ytd), with the VIX jumping 6.60% to 15.19 on breadth that was lopsidedly negative — 133 advancers against 368 decliners, the average S&P stock down 0.90%. Gold rose 2.22% to $4,477.70 and WTI crude gained 3.16% to $85.00 as bitcoin, unusually, rose alongside them, up 2.58% to $64,439 — a hard-asset bid running through equities, metals and crypto at once.

The catalyst was the Strait of Hormuz. The 60-day US-Iran memorandum of understanding, signed in June to buy time toward a broader deal, expired Monday with neither side willing to renew it and not a single major tanker route restored through a strait that carried roughly a fifth of the world’s oil and LNG before the conflict, per Tech Times. Oil’s reaction showed up in the futures curve too: Brent, above $91 a barrel (+2.99% to $91.17), pushed its roll yield further into backwardation (2.09 versus WTI’s 0.97) — a market pricing near-term tightness, not just headline fear.
