Breadth was quietly negative — 230 advancers against 270 decliners — even as the average stock still eked out +0.21% and new highs beat new lows 26-to-3, a sign the day's real losses were concentrated rather than broad. Energy (+4.61%) ran away with sector leadership as WTI jumped 5.09% to $82.16 and Brent 4.94% to $87.68, both curves pushing deeper into backwardation (rolls +1.28% and +2.35%). The trigger was the weekend's Iran turn: Trump told Axios Sunday the US is now "only semi-negotiating" with Tehran, favoring the naval blockade over further strikes, while Iran's foreign ministry said there is "no possibility of restarting negotiations" while the US keeps violating June's memorandum of understanding, per Al Jazeera.

The other story was AI capital formation eating its own tail. Nvidia fell 2.86% despite — or because of — an FT report that it's assembling over $500bn in third-party AI-infrastructure financing with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR; CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC he approached only those six firms and "none turned him down," per CNBC. It lands atop Bloomberg's running worry that Nvidia's AI-related financing commitments, now above $750bn, are reviving "circular financing" fears — the same counterparties Nvidia bankrolls are also its biggest chip customers, per Bloomberg. Intel added to the unease, falling 4.06% after its first public share sale since its 1971 listing — a $15bn offering funding AI and foundry capacity as 2026 capex guidance rises toward $20bn, per Bloomberg. Optical names took the hardest hits — Coherent -14.24%, Lumentum -8.61%, Ciena -5.99% — which Yahoo Finance pins on pre-earnings de-risking after a torrid run, not a broad chip unwind.

The factor tape confirmed the risk-off tilt: High Beta (-0.77%) and Momentum (-0.65%) led decliners while Value (+0.29%), Min Volatility (+0.21%) and Quality (+0.02%) held up better — capital rotating out of the year's hottest trades, not fleeing equities outright. Airlines caught the oil spike, with Southwest (-4.57%) and United (-4.48%) among the day's worst S&P names, while Real Estate (-1.23%) and Utilities (-1.10%) also lagged. Our take: nothing about Monday looked like genuine risk-off — it looked like selective de-risking, money rotating from the AI-capex and optics names that ran hardest into energy and value ahead of a week that could reprice both the Fed path and the Hormuz risk premium at once. A $500bn vote of confidence in AI infrastructure that the market greeted by selling the stock is not a small tell.
